Bhoomithra Sena Club - Environmentally Conscious and Socially Responsible Young Women's Club
Bhoomithra Sena Club in the college formed with support from Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, Government of Kerala, aims at grooming environmentally conscious and socially responsible young women who will value the bounties of nature and strive to preserve them. Over the past few years BMC (Bhoomithra Sena Club) members in the college, besides organizing seminars, debates, lectures and quiz program’s on environmental issues, have actively been working to promote scientific waste management and preserve traditional water bodies in their locality. Such pro-active and dedicated work earned them the award from 'The Directorate of Environment and Climate Change' as the second best club in central zone in Kerala for the year 2012-13.
Our vision is to create awareness among the youth about the importance of conserving nature and its resources. And our mission is to gradually downturn the use of plastic by using the alternative option of Cloth bags (Bhoomithram Sanchi) and thus to join hands with nature.
Bhoomithram Sanchi' (Cloth bags)
'Bhoomithram Sanchi' was designed as a part of “Ezhazhakilekke Ezhikkara” project. 'Bhoomithram Sanchi' is a cloth bag made from old clothes. The objective is to make the use of 'Bhoomithram Sanchis' a fashion among all the students of St. Teresa's College and other educational institutions in Ernakulam district, thereby reducing the volume of non-recyclable plastic waste being generated in Kochi city at present. We propose to train as many 'Kudumbasree' (Women Community Network) members as possible in stitching these bags and popularizing its use among various segments of society such as students, residents associations etc. The key objective is to promote the basic principles of waste management such as recycling of old textiles, resource recovery from non-biodegradable clothes and reduction of plastic waste.
Activities of ' Bhoomithra Sena Club'
- Spreading environment literacy- particularly on solid waste management and agriculture production
- Creating awareness about the need for scientific segregation of waste at source
- Reducing the dependence on plastic products and suggesting alternate options like cloth, jute etc.
- Promoting organic cultivation of vegetables in households & institutions.
