Exploring the Complexity of Gender in the Modern World

Gender is a fundamental aspect of human identity and social interaction. Yet, the meanings and expectations associated with gender vary widely across time and culture. In contemporary society, numerous gender discourses shape our understanding and experience of gender. In this post, we will explore some critical gender discourses in modern society, including the social construction of gender, the #MeToo movement, and evolving understandings of masculinity and femininity.

Gender as a Social Construct

One of the most influential gender discourses in contemporary society is the idea that gender is a social construct. This means that the meanings and expectations associated with gender are not fixed or innate but are created and reinforced by social and cultural norms. The Department of Sociology and Centre for Research, in association with Mahatma Gandhi University UGC - STRIDE, is conducting an online Faculty Development Programme on "Gender Discourses in the Contemporary Society." This program aims to help faculty members engage with the various gender discourses in modern society and develop a deeper understanding of gender and its implications for social policy and education. In addition, the FDP is an excellent opportunity for participants to exchange perspectives and experiences with experts in the field of gender studies and to promote gender parity and social justice in their respective fields.
